We had a wonderful response to our book appeal and are delighted to have now donated these to charity.
Everyone involved with the school will know how important reading is to us at Gorsey Bank and it’s fantastic to see the children immersing themselves in different stories and adventures on a daily basis.
We wanted to share the enjoyment our pupils get from reading with others and have been collecting books for the school’s partner charity Ronald McDonald House in Manchester.
Thanks to the generosity of the children and their parents and carers, we were able to gift more than 100 brand new and pre-loved books to the charity to share with children, and their siblings, who are under the care of Manchester Children’s Hospital.
The books were presented to a representative from Ronald McDonald House, Alice Beck, who came into school and spoke to the children about the charity’s work and the families they support.
We’d like to say thank you to everyone who took part for their kind donations and for helping us to share the joy of reading with others.
Gorsey Bank was transformed into Hogwarts last week for our Harry Potter Book Night and a magical evening was enjoyed by everyone.
We were delighted with how many pupils came along to share this journey of the imagination, as we travelled into a land of spells, enchantment and adventure. The evening included Harry Potter book readings, films extracts and wand-making along with other themed games and activities.
The event was the culmination of our Reading is Magic project, where staff and pupils shared their love of books in school.
It’s no secret that reading and literacy is high on our agenda at Gorsey Bank. As a school, it is our priority to ensure all children have the opportunity to explore different book styles and genres, and to discover the ones they enjoy the most.
It’s wonderful to see the enthusiasm that our pupils have for reading and we’ve had some lovely responses from them to the question:
Why is Reading Magic?
“Reading is Magic because you can learn about the whole world.” (Reception pupil).
“Reading is Magic because you can pretend to be any character you like.” (Reception pupil).
“Reading is magic because it takes you to another land and you can go on an adventure. It makes your imagination spread wider.” (Year 3 pupil).
“Reading is magic because it makes you feel calm.” (Year 3 pupil).
“Reading is magic because it takes you to a different dimension and fills you with joy and adventure.” (Year 5 pupil).
“Reading is magic because it takes you off to faraway lands and takes any stress out of your mind leaving you with only happiness.” (Year 5 pupil).
We’re also delighted to have had some responses from children’s writers to this important question:
“It opens your eyes to the inside of other people’s heads, and the landscapes they live in. Also, the characters in books will always be your friends. Always, even after you’ve grown up.” (Fleur Hitchcock).
“Books show you that the world is big and varied and filled to the brim with wonder.” (Abi Elphinstone).
“... because you’re transported to new lands and faraway places, taken on adventures, shown the world through someone else’s eyes, all from the comfort of your reading spot.” (Jess Butterworth).
“When you find the kinds of books you love it’s magic. If I could give a gift to every child it would be the love of reading, because when you read for pleasure it changes your life.” (Michelle Harrison).
